The daughter of South African immigrants, Catherine is very intelligant, sharp and focussed. From a young age she was interested in biology and achieved excellant grades at school and continued her education well into University. Despite the incident that lead to her recruitment into BAIT, Catherine is also resiliant and confident in her abilities. With sharp leadership skills and a highly active attitude, other people look up to her, often literally. Because of her great height and unusual strength, speed and agility, as well as her sharp intellect, Catherine has diverse hobbies and friends from just as diverse backgrounds which helps her distance herself from her job and she balances a healthy lust for life with a depressing workload. Because of her upbringing, Catherine can be elitist and often critisises others, often unfairly. Notably, Catherine cannot truely understand men's reaction to her and is vicious regarding male taunts about her height, and has never taken a male suitor, yet she is pleasant to be with and is very protective of others. At BAIT she extends this protection to Ben, and sees him as a somewhat self-centered friend. A veteran of BAIT for 5 years at the start of the story, she was assigned to work with Ben after her partner and mentor was killed on assignment and has been with Ben for 4 months. She is determined not to let Ben or herself share his fate. |

Despite being fully trained in several different fields, Ben does not, and can not act like a typical scientist, or indeed, like a professional BAIT agent and has never taken a 'boring job' as he sees it. Preferring to lounge around when given half the chance, which is often, Ben joined BAIT seeing it as a high pay-low work job. He was wrong and reminds others of this at every opportunity. Ben is subconsciously prodigiously observant, which is all the more frustrating when people shun him, as he never forgets rejection. Ben is often blunt and straight to the point and while he is polite he isn't patient enough to play around with diplomacy and can get on the bad side of people because of this. Outside of work, Ben prefers competitive activities such as football although he has taken to "eying" Catherine's latest girlfriend, (often in shock) a fact that amuses her greatly. Ultimately, for his own motives, Ben works for the money, rather than the pleasure although he does have great respect for Catherine and the work that she does. He's recently begun carrying a microinjection gun on duty. While non-lethal it is against regulations and he keeps it for his own Personal security and it seems to have a souvenir value. Catherine rightly guesses that Ben has it mainly to cause trouble. Ben has been with BAIT for 4 months since the story starts with Catherine as a partner, his superior and and more importantly, his friend. |

Zophia

Like all robots in the KD-B series, Zophia has a limited personality that enables 'her' to maximimise cooperation with BAIT agents. She communicates via her built in modem and will verbalise if needed, but for inexplicable reasons, Zophia tends to speak with a Russian accent although the default hardware settings don't have many accents avaiable. Since Ben tends to prefer machines to many people, Zophia and Ben tend to work well together, often rivalling the relationship with him and Catherine. Also, as with all robots that BAIT requires, Zophia is loaded with the latest in mobile biodiagnostic software (in miniature form) including infra-red scanners, a nano mass spectrometer, a minature microscopy kit in the chasis as well as a multitude of sensors in the fingers. In certain circumstances, it enables Zophia to do many kinds of analysis and even autopsy and surgery if needed. As a very limited AI, Zophia has great dificulty understanding what she is actually picking up, and so requires another BAIT agent to be with her to make sense of what information she is gathering. In the role of a WHOISUID hub, BAIT agents can literally "upload" their communications to BAITHQ through Zophia which is far more secure and efficient then phoning and as such is the liason between Ben, Catherine and BAIT HQ. They can also gain a view of everything that she sees if necessary. Zophia Moves via an antigrav system that is generated through spines that cover the chasis so can literally "fly" out of the way of busy people. She also possesses a lusty sense of humour, disturbing for a robot. |
