Introduction

In biology, Meiosis is an important method that advanced living organisms use to produce sperm and eggs. These different gametes produce offspring different from their parents. Because Meiosis literally jumbles genes, no two sperm egg/combinations will ever produce the same child twice.

In much the same way, a few characters can produce stories very different than the sum of their parts.

Meiosis The Comic is set in the mid/late 21st century in the United Kingdom. As technology becomes much more advanced, society, government and even corporations suffer increased difficulty in the supply, demand and natural risks of such technology, biology in particular has even greater risks simply because it interacts directly with living beings.

As such, there are agents, private and governmental who troubleshoot even the most unexploited crises and these are the individuals Meiosis revolves around.

There are many different kinds of agencies (and agents), these are the most important:

S.R.D.A.S.I.U

Location: Leeds, UK
Reports to: Department of Environmental, food and rural affairs, department of health
Notable Characters: Prof. William Goldsmith, Laura Binder BSc

Pronounced 'sir-dar-sue', the Scientific Research and Development Anomalous Situation Investigation Unit was created in the early 2000s by His Majesty's Government with the purpose of assisting scientists working in more “clandestine” technology.

SRDASIU is sub-divided into smaller organisations such as P.A.I.N.T (PHysical Anomaly INvesitgation team) and B.A.I.T (Biological Anomaly Investigation Team) who work independently from each other under one roof which enables specialists from different fields to work in an environment suitable for their training. The tasks that each sub-organisation are expected to undertake differ slightly but all follow similar themes:

Typical assignments are hazardous, involving everything from 'experiments gone wrong' to illegal breaches of law or simply inspection of logistical services. Agents of SRDASIU have full jurisdiction to intervene as they see fit when gross breaches of law or health and safety are concerned, but are withheld from using aggressive actions and all such actions are reported directly to government.

SRDASIU HQ is only typically believed to be in Leeds.

B.A.I.T

Location: ?????
Reports to: Division Secretary SRDASIU
Notable Characters: Dr Lawrence Hedges (deceased), Catherine Murdock MSC, Ben Flowers (II) Bsc, KD-116664153-B Analysis Drone 'Zophia', Lucinda Queen.

THE MAJORITY OF THE CAST OF MEIOSIS WORK FOR THIS ORGANISATION.

The Biological Anomaly Investigation Team, a sub-group of SRDASIU:

BAIT recruits biologists who have unique skills such as photographic memory or minor psychic potential and possess strong initiative talents. These individuals are then expected to be the sole representative of SRDASIU when on assignment although they report directly to BAIT.

All active agents work in teams based on skill profiles, although exact psychological profiles such as insanity risk or deliberating phobias are given low priority. All agents are expected to act professionally, even if they hate each other.

Highly skilled professionals such as doctors and professors are no longer able to work for BAIT. Despite the rigorous training, both physical and mental, casualties in BAIT are surprisingly high and are the highest for any of the SRDASIU wings. Surprisingly the on-site risk is low but accidents happen when least expected.

Teams are given an analysis drone for tech support and as a secure liaison with BAITHQ and are injected with a suite of nanotechnology upgrades including a system that destroys target cells if infected by pathogens as well as a NANO communication network. Agents are expected to use a biohazard restriction suit when appropriate.

ChemWaFaCor

Location:?????
Reports to: ???...Ministry of Defence
Notable Characters: Sgt Vincent "Blackeye" Blackman, Lt Michael "pally" Paladin, Lt Joseph "Think-tank" Ravier, Lt Maxwell "Lord Jenny" Jenkins, Sentry Drone K4 Myrul "Myra".

Cellbank Technologies

Location: Worldwide
Notable Characters: Elizabeth Carthright MSc, Lexi Conners, Carrie Samson, Ben Flowers

Created as an amalgamation of several small companies that existed in the 1960's, Cellbank Technologies is an agressive company with a strong work ethic that borders on single-minded fundamentalism. They are only the producer of biological products, rather than the wholesaler which gives the company huge leverage in the biopharm market: if a product is non-ethical for one market or supplier, it can be sold to another. The research budget is excessive and seems to be countered only by the quality of staff who understand far too easily that their lives could be expendable.

The pride of Cellbank is the CB7/001 Macro-bioreactor, one of the largest in the world and capable of thousands of tons of useful product a week. The real issue of what is stored inside the reactor to produce these products is another thing altogether...

Technology

The technology in Meiosis isn't extraordinarily adavnced for the time, but it is functional and no penny is spared!

Mark XVII Rapid Deployment Biohazard Restriction Suit

The mark 17 is worn as a neck collar and wrist braclets and is self powered.

The immediate advantages it has over the older designs are its ability to be worn over normal clothes, its strong protection, general lightness and its nano-polymerisation system enables it to be equipped or removed rapidly.

In emergencies detected by the collars, the suit will coat the wearer in protective plastic in less than one tenth of a second, although this is very jarring. By default it can be constructed much slower at the agent's convenience. The suit is resistant to extremes of Ph and microbial invasion. It also supplies 2 minutes of oxygen without additional breathing gear if the suit is vacuum sealed. The torso is resistant to low calibre firearms and it is difficult to cut the suit due to the nano assembly technique. However, after more than 5 uses, the suit cannot re-polymerise and becomes useless. Newest model also comes with a torch and a HUD.

The Mark 17 has recently been replaced with the Mark XVIII which negates the need for bulky bracelets or a colllar as it is now small enough to be installed in a watch. The 18 is significantly more comfortable to wear and fully customisable in terms of colour and general proportions as well as being a lot more user friendly.

Ben's Microinjection Gun

The LLBroth Microinjection Gun is normally used to administer sedatives to violent patients in medical wards as well as injection into trees and is adapted for use in a lab setting. Can use a customisable loadout by injecting the required fluid into specialised non-lethal silicon casings. Ben uses his mainly as protection against annoying clients but it also has souvenir value for some reason.

Cath's Eyes

Catherine is not one to save money when she can spend it on very pretty things. Her cosmetic implants enable her to see in the dark via small implants in the anterior chamber of her eye that are under her full control. The cosmetic effect is that her eyes light up like torches, which could be considered somewhat romantic, or horrendously frightening, depending on your point of view.

Whoisuid

The who-is-you-ID system is integrated into a SRDASIU standard suite of nanotechnology upgrades that are integrated into the agent's nervous system. The result is wireless communication via thought over short distances (that vary by reception clearance) that feels like a cross between a mobile phone and true telepathy. Is different from the civilian system in that it is closed circuit, enables an agent to communicate with their analysis drone and can help agents communicate with each other if in a dangerous environment and seperated, with a degree of privacy. Agents are asked not to abuse the system by continously flirting while on assignment.

Meiosis is very well looked after by ComicGenesis who do web hosting and automatic site maintenance, more importantly, it's free!
